Been meaning to start this one since the cleanup on Sept 12 and kept putting it off. I picked up my bags at the Sugarloaf gatehouse like usual and worked the shoreline back toward the point, mostly by boat since the bank is tough to get to on foot. Ended up with six bags and a pile that didn't fit in any of them. Lots of fishing line and bobbers, busted foam from old docks, beer cans (some of them older than my grandkids), two tires, and half a lawn chair. Best find was a cast iron skillet, rusted solid but I think it'll clean up. Not sure how it ended up out there, and I don't want to know.
What did the rest of you haul out, and what's the strangest thing you came across? Somebody told me they found a whole outboard cover last year.
I read this was the 57th one, and that it goes back to 1969 and was the model for the statewide cleanup. I didn't know that till I saw the KAIT story before the event. Kind of neat that something that started on our lake got the whole state doing it.
Ideas for next year, since it's a long way off but not that long:
- A few more boats and pontoons signed up for the spots you can't reach from the road. That's where most of the junk is.
- Hand out grabbers at the gatehouses along with the bags. My knees would thank somebody.
- A cookout afterward. I'll bring the smoker if somebody else handles the sides. Eleven hours of pork shoulder is a good thank-you for people who just spent a Saturday in the mud.
Curious what the rest of you think. Anybody know if the Corps ever tallies up total pounds? I'd like to see it.
